New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu (R-N.Y.) said in remarks Thursday that former President Donald Trump could win the upcoming presidential election against Vice President Harris if he “remains professional” and focuses.
“The cost of living is going to be a very real issue in this campaign in September and October. It’s a very real issue for the American people as long as the former president stays focused and professional and talks about what the American people want to talk about,” Sununu told Fox News anchor Neil Cavuto on his show “Your World with Neil Cavuto.”
“As soon as he goes in the wrong direction, he lets the Democrats win the election by a landslide, which they really have to do,” Sununu continued.
Trump has been hurling insults at his 2024 presidential rivals as his political star has risen in the past month, with his supporters pressuring the former president to stick to his policies rather than attack his opponent.
“Ultimately, if he can focus on these issues over the next 60 days, he will win,” Sununu said, citing inflation, the cost of living and credit card debt as examples.
“He’s going to win big. And if he stays professional, stays focused on his campaign, stays focused on the undecided voters, not his base, that’s what’s important. And that’s how he can rekindle that enthusiasm that he had a month and a half ago,” the governor added.
Trump’s former adviser Kellyanne Conway said earlier this week that Trump’s winning strategy was to “insult less.”
“President Trump’s winning formula seems very clear,” Conway told Fox Business anchor Larry Kudrow on Monday. “Less insults, more insight, more policy contrasts.”
Harris has been rising in recent polls, with The Hill/Decision Desk’s national polling average showing her ahead of Trump by 1.8 percentage points.
A recent New York Times/Siena College poll found Harris leading Trump by 4 percentage points in three key battleground states: Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin.
Congress has reached out to the Trump campaign.
