Legendary Indian cricket team batsman Sunil Gavaskar was left stunned by Nitish Reddy’s reverse scoop during Day 1 of the pink-ball Test against Australia in Adelaide on Friday. In the 42nd over of the Indian innings, Scott Boland bowled a length delivery just outside the off stump and Nitish decided to try an unorthodox approach to the ball. He got into his stance very quickly and scooped the ball over the slip fielder for a six. It was one of the longest parts of the ground and the shot even entertained Jasprit Bumrah at the non-striker’s end. In an analysis for Star Sports, Gavaskar was all praise for the youngster and said his approach shows “youthful fearlessness” even in Test cricket.
“Well, I think it was a very good innings. They recognized the need of the situation and attacked at the right time when the fielder was in the circle.”
“The way he tried to hit the pull shot, even when the defender was outside Scott Borland’s fence, the reverse sweep was outstanding. He tried to play the right ball and it shows what he got, the right temperament.” Gavaskar said.
The former India skipper was also impressed by Nitish’s bravery while batting the shot and said the young all-rounder looks like a good prospect for Indian cricket.
“He is a young player of 22 years, but he shows the bravery of youth. He has tremendous confidence. Every time I see him on the field, I feel that we have a good prospect here for Indian cricket.”
“Look at that reverse scoop. It’s an amazing shot for a six. It was the longest boundary,” he said.
