A government shutdown is imminent as Congress tries to agree on a funding strategy by the end of the month. The countdown to Election Day has begun and the race is heating up after this week’s presidential debates. Both topics are likely to be discussed on talk shows this Sunday.
House Republicans failed to unite behind Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-La.) strategy of extending funding for six months. He later withdrew a scheduled vote on the bill after facing opposition from his party.
Rep. Tony Gonzalez (R-Texas) will join NewsNation’s “The Hill Sunday.” Gonzalez has recently criticized his own party and said the GOP is likely to lose the House in the upcoming election.
He criticized the far right and claimed that neither party was doing anything for the American people. Instead, they were talking about “who are we going to impeach?”
Some Senate Republicans are warning House Republicans against a standoff over a government shutdown.
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-Calif.) will appear on “Fox News Sunday” to discuss the looming deadline.
Former President Trump’s running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), is scheduled to appear on several shows this week, an attempt by the campaign to build momentum after the debate, in which Vice President Harris was widely considered the winner.
Vance and Trump came under sharp criticism after the Ohio senator expanded on false claims that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, eat people’s pets. Trump repeated the claim during the debate, and the city has been dealing with the fallout this week, including a bomb threat at City Hall and the evacuation of schools.
Vance could be asked about his remarks and the final push for the campaign in November. He is scheduled to appear on CNN’s “State of the Union,” CBS’s “Face the Nation” and NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) will likely join ABC’s “This Week” to discuss the increased aid to Springfield after the city suffered in the wake of Trump and Vance’s comments. DeWine said earlier this week that the internet “goes pretty crazy at times” and that Springfield’s immigrant population works “very, very hard.”
After the debate, Harris continued her campaign in key states. She recently attended two rallies in the swing state of North Carolina.
Her allies are continuing to spread her message. Gov. Wes Moore (D-Md.) is scheduled to appear on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” and Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-Pa.) is scheduled to appear on CNN’s “State of the Union” and “Fox News Sunday.”
