9:02 a.m. Pacific Standard Time — NASA has released a statement about its investigation into the strange sounds heard by astronauts. Butch Wilmore“The pulsating sound from the speakers aboard Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, as heard by NASA astronaut Butch Wilmore aboard the International Space Station, has stopped. The speaker feedback was a result of an audio configuration change between the space station and Starliner.”
The statement continues: “Space station audio systems are complex and interconnect multiple spacecraft and modules, and experiencing noise and feedback is common. Crew members are asked to contact Mission Control if they hear any noise from their communications systems. The speaker feedback reported by Wilmore has no technical implications for the crew, Starliner, or station operations, and Starliner did not undock unmanned from the station prior to Friday, September 6.”
As if being stuck in space in the near future wasn’t enough, one of the astronauts stuck on the ISS has sent NASA an ominous audio message attributed to a defect in his Boeing Starliner aircraft.
First reported in Audio Ars TechnicaAstronaut Butch Wilmore is heard communicating with Johnson Space Center in Houston… telling mission control, “I have a question for Starliner. There’s a strange noise coming out of the speakers… I don’t know what it is.”
Mission Control had figured out a way for Butch to play a sound over the phone… and after one failed attempt, Mission Control confirmed, “Butch, we heard that sound. It sounded like a pulsating sound, like a sonar ping.”
This recording was first captured and shared by a meteorologist in Michigan. Rob Dale.
Butch replayed the audio just to be sure, telling NASA, “Let’s play it one more time and see if you can all scratch your heads and figure out what happened.”
Houston assured him that he would forward the recordings and let Butch know what they found.
As we previously reported… Wilmore and fellow astronauts Sunny Williams Got stranded Starliner was scheduled to remain at the International Space Station from June 6 due to propulsion problems and a helium leak… but it was only supposed to stay for a week.
