Sports commentator Stephen A. Smith said Americans elected President Donald Trump to a second term because he was “closer to the top” than Democrats.
“(Trump) was impeached twice. He was convicted of 34 felonies,” Smith said while appearing on a panel discussion on Friday night’s HBO episode.Live with Bill Maher.” “And Americans still said, ‘He’s closer to the top than what we see on the left.’”
The ESPN host, 57, accused the left of focusing on issues that only affect a small percentage of the population.
“He’s closer to the top. why? Because when you talk about issues that relate to less than 1% of the population, for example, when you talk about the transgender community, there are things that are relevant,” Smith said. “The Democrats felt like that was a priority over other issues.”
He continued: “So he knows what you’re talking about now: birth, citizenship, and what have you. He knows it won’t make it through the mustard. But he knows he made that promise.”
Smith praised Trump for appearing to keep his “promises” on the issues he campaigned on, despite resistance from his administration’s opponents.
“So he showed up on Capitol Hill the first week and said, ‘This is what we’re going to do through executive order.’ It’s going to be shot down through the courts and whatever happens to you, he’s saying this. ‘I kept my promise,’ he said.
The “First Take” host then accused Democrats of not keeping their promises or being a “voice” for the American people.
“Then turn around, look to your left, and ask, ‘What promises have you kept?’”
Smith continued, “What resonated with voters? Is there a voter at this moment who can look at the Democratic Party and say, ‘We have someone up on Capitol Hill representing us and fighting the fight we want them to fight on our behalf?’ ‘”
“(Democrats) didn’t do that,” Smith said. That’s why their backs are at home and (Trump) is back in the White House.”
