The U.S. men’s basketball team won its fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal on Saturday, but it wasn’t an easy task. They beat France 98-87.
After France cut the U.S. lead to 82-79 with just over three minutes left, Steph Curry put the game away. The two-time MVP hit four 3-pointers in the final three minutes to seal the U.S. victory and give him the only basketball achievement he doesn’t have: an Olympic gold medal.
The four 3-pointers accounted for half of Curry’s total on Saturday, leading him to a team-high 24 points. Phoenix Suns teammates Kevin Durant and Devin Booker each had 15 points. For Durant, Saturday’s win was his fourth Olympic gold medal.
LeBron James also won his third gold medal on Saturday. He scored 14 points, had 10 rebounds and six assists in Saturday’s game.
James was on the wrong end of a game highlight before Curry’s second-half heroics. France’s Guerchon Yabusele dunked on James after he was fouled in the first half. Yabusele, the tournament’s breakout star, finished with 20 points.
San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembayama scored a game-high 26 points.
France is the first host nation to compete in a men’s basketball gold medal game since the United States in 1996. France won silver for the second consecutive Olympics.
