“How long does it take to make a game?”
I think it’s too long. Considering that console generations last about 6 years, it shouldn’t take more than 4 years to fully develop a game. Compare current development times to the last generation.
During the five-year PS1 generation, we released three full-featured Final Fantasy games, three Spyro games, three Crash Bandicoot games, three main Resident Evil games, two Dino Crisis games, three Gran Turismo games, and five Tomb Raider games.
The six-year PS2 generation had three Final Fantasy games, three Shadow Hearts games, two Resident Evil games, three Monster Hunter games, two God of War games, two Kingdom Hearts games, five Silent Hill games, and three GTA games.
Even in the PS3 generation, where graphics and games were much more sophisticated, there were two Elder Scrolls games, two GTA games, two Resident Evil games, four BioShock games, several Assasin’s Creed games, two Gran Turismo games, three Mass Effect games, two God of War games, two Dragon Age games, three Dead Space games, three Uncharted games, three Resistance games, two Killzone games, two Fallout games, two Witcher games, and many others.
The PS4 generation was when things started to get worse. Developers started to start games and scrap them left and right, and games could be out of pre-production for years. Console generations last about 6 years and they take 5-10 years to finish a single game. That means each development team only releases one game for the entire generation! What are they doing for 6-7 years?
