If you’re looking forward to playing Starfield’s Shattered Space expansion when it launches later this month, you’re in luck. Bethesda has just released a new in-depth video, in which the DLC developers take a closer look at House Va-ruun’s adventures on Earth.
We’ve already seen plenty of details and teasers about how the studio will handle the DLC practically and thematically, but this is the first time Bethesda has gone in-depth about how characters will be drawn into the story and what exactly they’ll be doing.

In this new, in-depth video, several Starfield developers, including Senior Creative Producer Tim Lamb and Design Director Emil Pagliarullo, walk us through the initial setup scenario for the expansion’s main story, while also mentioning a few other interesting details, some of which we’ve already heard.
So, what happened story-wise? Well, as Senior Quest Designer Brian Chapin put it, the expansion builds on the theme of the base game, “Humanity’s quest for knowledge,” by showing what happens when a group like House Va’ruun goes too far. “Before the events of Shattered Space, a secret experiment using grav-drive technology went horribly wrong,” he said, and Pagliarulo continued, “The result was a massive rip in the fabric of space-time, swallowing up a large portion of the Va’ruun capital city of Dazra.”
You will be parachuting into the aftermath of this event, known as the “Vortex Incident,” which has thrown House Varun into disarray. People are missing, and the government’s headquarters, the “Scale Citadel,” is now “engulfed in a strange energy field.” “Among the missing is Anasco Varun, leader of the Varun people and spokesman for the Great Serpent,” Pagliarullo explains. “In his absence, all of the lesser houses that make up House Varun are competing for the future of the faction.”
The footage also reveals a number of details about a new alien creature called the “Vortex Terror,” which should make for some very interesting combat, as it can ambush you out of the blue.
