Ubisoft turned the SGF demo inside out at the Star Wars Outlaws preview event in Orange County earlier this month. There’s no screen timer, no broken missions. I played Outlaws for nearly five hours, and much of that time was spent talking to NPCs, taking on side jobs for factions that hate each other, and completely blowing Kay’s speeder off the biggest rock ramp you can find on Toshara, a planet of deep canyons and desert scrub where the opening minutes unfold.
While my complaints about the unprovoking gunplay, stiff climbing, and stupid Stormtrooper AI haven’t changed, I’ve found that Outlaws shares some notable traits with other Ubisoft open-world games. No aspect is an exception, but when it all comes together, it’s a really fun time.
