New York — St. John’s men’s and women’s basketball teams will wear ‘Lou’ patches on their uniforms for the remainder of the season in honor of Hall of Fame coach Lou Kaneseca, who passed away Saturday at age 99.
A funeral mass will be held Friday morning at St. Thomas More Church on the university’s Queens campus, and the athletic department will announce a “carne” during men’s and women’s games this weekend at his namesake stadium, St. George’s Stadium. We will be hosting a “Tribute to Coach Seka”. John announced on Tuesday.
The Red Storm men, led by coach Rick Pitino, play Kansas State on Saturday as part of the Big 12-Big East Battle. The women’s team faces Wake Forest on Sunday.
The reserved seats in Section 7, Row JJ, Seat 3, where Carnesecca often competed after his retirement in 1992, will remain empty in his honor.
Both matches will feature a video tribute to Carneseca and a moment of silence in the stadium. Commemorative decals will be installed on the court, and St. John’s players will wear “526” shooting shirts to display their career win totals.
The school also plans to honor his life and legacy with digital billboards on the Long Island Expressway, Whitestone Expressway and New Jersey Turnpike.
The winningest coach in the history of the men’s program, Carneseca went 526-200 in 24 seasons at St. John’s, spanning two seasons from 1965-92. He led the team to five Big East regular season titles, 18 NCAA Tournament appearances and a Final Four victory in 1985.
St. John’s will also host Lou Carnesecca Day on campus Jan. 4, one day before his 100th birthday, when the team plays Butler.
