Sri Lanka and Bangladesh put in a superb performance to take a step closer to the semi-finals of the Women’s Asia Cup T20 tournament in Dambulla on Monday after beating Malaysia and Thailand in Group B. While hosts Sri Lanka were crushed by a massive 114 runs against Malaysia, Bangladesh edged Thailand by seven wickets later in the day. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh each earned four points, occupying the top two spots. Chamari Attapatu was the driving force behind Sri Lanka’s crushing victory, scoring 119 runs off 69 balls, hitting 14 boundaries and seven sixes to single-handedly guide her team to a 184-4 victory.
Harshitha Madavi (26) and Anushka Sanjeewani (31) also made useful contributions.
The bowlers then joined in with Shashini Jimhani (3/9), Kawaya Kavindi (2/7) and Kabishah Dilhari (2/4) putting in some impressive numbers to help Malaysia finish with just 40 runs in 19.5 overs.
Inoshi Priyadharshani (1/10), Sachini Nisansala (1/4) and Ama Kanchana (1/5) also took a wicket each.
For Malaysia, only Elsa Hunter could reach double figures, scoring 10 runs off 11 balls. Aina Nazwa scored 9 runs after facing 43 balls, which was the reason Malaysia were able to endure so many overs.
In the second match that day, Thailand suffered a disappointing 96-9 in 20 overs as opener Nataya Butchatdam decided to take the lead and scored 40 runs from 41 balls.
Raveya Khan was the most successful bowler with 14 runs from four wickets while Sabikun Nahar (2/28) and Ritu Moni (2/10) took two wickets each to devastate the opposition.
Murshida Khatun, who was aiming for 97 runs for the win, scored 50 runs off 55 balls as Bangladesh won a resounding 100 runs for 3 in 17.3 overs.
Dilara Akter (17) was run out in the fifth over but Khatun and Ishma Tanjim (16) shared 60 runs to steady the chase.
