Manchester United’s new manager Ruben Amorim has a huge task ahead of him and he is slowly coming to terms with it in his first week of training.
Players lack concentration. This is something the Portuguese tactician didn’t have to worry about in Lisbon. And he’s also not very happy with the squad composition.
But as far as January is concerned, the 39-year-old will be of little or no help as INEOS tighten their purse strings after a slew of bad decisions under Erik ten Hag.
Amorim has already committed not to join Sporting Lisbon players in the winter, but next summer will be a different story.
Cuenda bid next summer
Viktor Gyokeres continues to be linked with a move to Old Trafford, while Amorim are big fans of Geovany Quenda and a bid is imminent.
According to The Manchester Evening News, Sporting are already preparing for what might happen in the summer of 2025. The winger’s release clause is estimated at around €100m.
“Sporting expects Manchester United to make an offer for winger Giovanni Cuenda next year. Two weeks ago the Manchester Evening News revealed that United were tracking Quenda but were yet to submit a formal bid.
“Sources say United have been following Cuenda’s progress since the start of the season and he has a contract with Sporting until 2027.”
It goes really well with Amorim’s style.
It was Amorim who gave the 17-year-old his big break in the Sporting first-team, and he scored two goals and provided as many assists during that period.
He has broken numerous records since breaking through, becoming Sporting’s youngest goalscorer in the domestic league, surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo in a win over Famalicao last month.
In addition, he is also Sporting’s youngest player to play in the Champions League. His performance stood out as he was called up to the senior squad for the first time during Portugal’s international break.
He can play as both a winger and wing-back and has been likened to Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka. With concerns about United’s other wider options falling behind, you can see why Amorim would be keen to sign the youngster.
