Sony appears to be in the “early stages” of developing a new portable console in the same vein as its own PSP and PS Vita devices.
According to Bloomberg’s respected Takashi Mochizuki and Debbie Wu: They spoke with anonymous sources who claim that Sony is developing a new device to fight back against Nintendo’s handheld dominance and “counterattack” Xbox’s entry into the handheld market. In case you missed it, Xbox head honcho Phil Spencer candidly confirmed that Xbox is actively developing its own portable gaming console, even though it’s still a few years away.
The report goes on to say that the new device will be based somewhat on the existing PS Portal (which has been updated to allow streaming via Premium), but will be a completely standalone device capable of playing PS5 games. Think of it like a Steam Deck.
Personally, I think this part is a bit too much. At this stage, it seems impossible to pack PS5 specs into a portable device. But with launch still at least a few years away, one might assume that Sony will have this technology available and affordable by the time it’s ready to manufacture. At that point, the PS6 will be released or close to release.
