Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed that it will soon stop supplying the PlayStation 5 adapter that allows the original PlayStation VR headset to work with the console.
If PS5 owners want their original PS VR headset to work on the console, they’ll need to request a free adapter for the PlayStation camera, which is the only way to support it, as the PS5’s HD camera doesn’t support existing headsets.
According to the SIE support website, the PlayStation Camera adapter will no longer be available until November 26, 2024, or “while supplies last.”
The latest PlayStation VR 2 headset for PlayStation 5 is not backwards compatible with original PlayStation VR games on PS4, so there will be no official option to play these games on PS5 once the PS Camera adapter is no longer available.
This summer, PlayStation VR 2 received its biggest price cut ever ahead of its PC compatibility launch. The PC adapter was released last August for $59.99 / €59.99 / £49.99 at select retailers and direct.playstation.com.
PS5 VR features such as HDR, headset feedback, eye tracking, adaptive triggers, and haptic feedback (except rumble) are not available when playing on PC.
Last year, Eric Lempel, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s senior vice president and head of global marketing, described VR as a meaningful business for the company, but one that has yet to reach its potential.
