To get a free copy of older Xcode running on Snow Leopard, create (register) as an Apple Developer at this website: https://developer.apple.com/programs/register/. You can also convert your current Apple ID to a developer ID by logging in to the link above and following the instructions.
After creating a developer ID, go to https://developer.apple.com/downloads.
Search for Xcode in the top left corner of the page and uncheck all categories except Developer Tools just below the search box (keep them checked).
You will see three pages of results, with the second page having version 3 of Xcode for Snow Leopard.
