Sister Wives stars Kody Brown and Robyn Brown have purchased a $2.1 million mansion in Flagstaff, Arizona. And some headlines suggest the home purchase was in violation of a court order. There are even ridiculous stories that say you could even go to jail. It’s all nonsense. Let me explain why it’s hysterical.
Kody and Robyn purchased the nearly 8,000-square-foot home on Friday in the name of a trust they run. The main building measures 5,600 square feet. It has 4 bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms. There is a bonus room, formal living room, and theater room. There is also a 2,300-square-foot guesthouse. There are 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. There is also a 2,200 square foot RV garage. And a multi-garage.
Kody Brown and Robyn paid $420,000 on a 30-year mortgage. The loan principal amount is $1.68 million. If you have excellent credit and the highest interest rate on your loan, you’ll pay nearly $12,000 in monthly mortgage payments. Plus taxes and insurance. And they already have another mortgage worth about $2,800 a month. That’s a lot. Housing payments cost about $15,000 per month. That’s $180,000 per year!
Sister Wives: Kody Brown & Robyn Brown Buy $2.1 Million Flagstaff Mansion
So some sites are saying that Cody’s purchase of the house violated a court order in Kristin Brown’s lawsuit against Cody. She is suing to establish Truly Brown’s paternity. Because he wasn’t listed on her birth certificate. And she wants child support and child support.
This is a family court case. There is an automatic restraining order in all family cases in Utah. This covers harassment, defamation, assets and liabilities. So these armchair experts argue that Cody violated the part about not disposing of or concealing assets. However, that part of the injunction does not apply. This only applies to cases involving division of assets and division of liabilities.
For example, in a divorce, there may be a split between who owns the house and car and who pays off student loans or credit card debt. That is not the type of case Christine brought. And he doesn’t currently owe her anything. The case is ongoing. His paternity has not yet been confirmed by Truly. Once this is completed, the court will make an award for child support.
Nonetheless, as long as he pays in full and on time, Kody can buy and sell as many homes as he wants…
Sister Wives: Is timing important for Cody?
However, there is one thing that seems to connect the timing of this mansion purchase with Christine’s incident. One is a large down payment. They paid $420,000. It was 20% of the house price. This means you can avoid costly private mortgage insurance (PMI). This also means Kody doesn’t have a lump sum of cash on hand in case the court decides he owes him a lot of child support.
Often, the court establishes a payment plan when awarding such a lump sum. However, if Kody has a ton of cash in the bank, he might end up spending it all at once. Another problem with the injunction is the slander portion. The idea is that the parties cannot say bad things about each other out of earshot of the child. So I’m not sure how we can record Season 20 of Sister Wives.
SW Season 20: Why Cody Bought a New Mansion Before Christine’s Case Goes to Court
The restraining order went into effect the day Christine filed the lawsuit. It was the day after Season 19 debuted. So what they said in the confession and the scenes were already filmed. Therefore, the injunction does not apply. And it will remain in effect until the final ruling in the case is made. If there is a season 20 they will have to get an exception to the restraining order or Kody will have to learn to watch his mouth. Or maybe he actually violated the restraining order.
But in terms of buying this big house. No Kody Brown is in danger of going to jail. He did not violate any court order. He doesn’t flaunt the restraining order. He’s just preparing a big house for the wife he left behind…
