On Sunday, the U.S. Women’s National Team beat Iceland 3-1, and Racing Louisville FC’s Emma Sears played a key role in that result.
Sears, who came on as a 56th-minute substitute at Nashville’s Geodis Park, assisted the Americans’ equalizer before scoring a goal of his own. All this in her international debut at all levels of red, white and blue.
Racing rookie forward Sears first found Lynn Williams with a touch on goal as Williams tied the scores in the 72nd minute. After Lindsey Horan scored the USWNT’s go-ahead goal, Sears scored a goal of her own three minutes into second-half stoppage time.
With this achievement, Sears became the fourth player in USWNT history to record both a goal and an assist while earning her first cap. She is also the 23rd USWNT player to score in her debut.
Sears, 23, arrived in Louisville as a second-round pick in the 2024 NWSL Draft out of Ohio State. She scored five goals in 25 league appearances with the Racing to qualify for the playoffs in the club’s regular season finale at San Diego Wave FC next Sunday.
First, Sears could appear for the USWNT at Lynn Family Stadium this Wednesday when the Americans play in Louisville for the first time in 20 years. Kick-off for the friendly against Argentina is scheduled for 7pm and limited tickets are available through Ticketmaster.
