The world’s No. 1 golfer, Scottie Scheffler, was arrested by police on Friday while trying to drive through traffic outside Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, ahead of the second round of the PGA Championship.
Traffic outside the golf course was halted around 5 a.m. ET following a crash that killed a pedestrian.
ESPN’s Jeff Darlington reported that Scheffler attempted to continue the drive for another 10 to 20 yards. When he stopped, police asked Scheffler to get out of the car. Darlington said officers opened the car door, handcuffed the 27-year-old and placed him in the back seat of a police car. The video shows Scheffler in handcuffs being escorted by two police officers.
Scheffler was booked into the Louisville Metropolitan Corrections Department at 7:28 a.m. ET, according to online records. He was charged with second-degree assault on a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding a traffic signal for an officer directing traffic.
Scheffler was then released and arrived on the course shortly after 9 a.m. to play the second round of the PGA Championship with a 10:08 a.m. tee time. He was 2 under par through the first nine holes of his second round.
