With the Wallabies’ future uncertain beyond next year’s Lions tour, Joe Schmidt has named a 40-man squad to assemble in Sydney in January to kick off the 2025 campaign.
Queensland Reds’ big lifting new prop Massimo De Lutiis is the only unrestricted player in the cohort who will train for three days in Sydney from January 8.
It will be the only time the Wallabies team will come together before the end of the 2025 Super Rugby season. With the British and Irish Lions tour starting at the end of June.
The camp will include a debriefing for the 2024 Test season and medical and physical tests for the players ahead of their return to the Super Rugby Pacific club after their annual leave.
The squad includes 22 forwards and 18 backs, all of whom have played under Schmidt this year except De Lutiis, who is yet to feature in Super Rugby.
“These two-and-a-half days provide a final opportunity to look back on the 2024 season, particularly the November test, and take a quick look at our 2025 program,” Schmidt said in a statement.
“It is also an opportunity for Wallabies performance and medical staff to facilitate testing for players on the Spring Tour before they officially restart with the Super Rugby Pacific team.
“It’s great to see not only the players in camp, but many of them returning from injury and others who have performed well for the Australia XV team. We look forward to seeing them perform during the upcoming Super Rugby Pacific season.”
There is no room for Liam Wright, the first skipper Schmidt used when he returned from injury earlier this year.
Meanwhile, Schmidt, who finished his first year in office with 6 wins and 7 losses, is expected to soon make a decision on whether to leave after his contract expires next year or to participate in the 2027 World Cup in Australia. .
Earlier this week, Rugby Australia CEO Phil Waugh told RugbyPass that the organization was preparing for a Schmidt exit or renewal scenario.
“In line with the behavioral changes we have attempted to make culturally, we live up to our promises. One of the things Joe has made very clear is that it is a journey to the British and Irish Lions Series,” Waugh said.
“Obviously, as we get closer to that series, we have to be prepared for what happens after that, whether it’s an extension with Joe or a change in coaching structure.
“You probably don’t want to get too far ahead of yourself in your decisions… We’re committed to the Lions, we’re focused on the Lions, and obviously we need to plan for different scenarios depending on the circumstances. About the results with Joe.”
