“Yes, he suffered from back spasms. He went for a scan,” Prasidh said. “The medical team is monitoring him. So, whenever the medical team comes back to us, we will know,” he said when asked whether Bumrah will bowl in the final innings of the series.
Bumrah spent three of the last five overs of the morning session off the field. He came back out for the last two overs and resumed bowling India after lunch. He started by hitting Alex Carey’s bat with the first ball, but his speed dropped from the low 120s to the low 130s (kph). Bumrah left the field immediately after bowling and was not seen until the broadcast showed him leaving the SCG in his car. He returned to the ground about two hours later, around 4:40 p.m. local time.
“When someone has such great form, you want to try and maximize that form as much as possible,” Rohit said. “And that is what we have been trying to do with Bumrah.
“But there comes a time when you have to step back a little bit and give him a little extra breath, so we were very careful.
“I’ve been very careful. I tell the person how I’m feeling and things like that. So, yeah, you have to manage those things carefully. And we’re trying to do that on the field as well.”
Bumrah had previously suffered a back stress fracture in 2022, which sidelined him for a year.
