South Africa’s four URC franchises – the Stormers, Bulls, Sharks and Lions – are each set to receive R50-million of the R400-million revenue generated from SA Rugby’s broadcasting rights and sponsorship.
According to the Sunday paper agreementSA Rugby has allowed representatives from its 15 unions to decide how to divide the revenue.
An ad hoc committee of representatives from 15 unions has put forward proposals, which have been discussed by national rugby leaders and are expected to be approved by the SA Rugby Council next month.
The proposal most likely to be accepted would see the Stormers, Bulls, Sharks and Lions each receive R50-million, an increase of more than 20 per cent on the R41-million annual payout they were previously receiving.
The Cheetahs, who compete in the EPCR Challenge Cup, will receive R27 million, while Griquas and Pumas will each put R24 million into their coffers. This is almost a 50 per cent increase on the R16.4 million paid annually to domestic franchises.
Meanwhile, smaller unions will each receive R17 million (up from R10.5 million).
