It can be difficult for a young player to lead a team that has veterans like MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja and Ajinkya Rahane. However, Ruturaj Gaikad has impressed many with his leadership qualities as he leads the Chennai Super Kings team in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Just before the tournament began, CSK announced a change in captaincy and Dhoni took over the baton. Gaikwad. When asked if he found it difficult to lead such players, the CSK skipper answered honestly.
Speaking to Times of India, Gaikwad said of the captaincy challenge, “I felt good (from the start of the tournament). He is very approachable to all his team members whenever required and always supports the team in the way the team requires.”
“I don’t think it’s difficult because everyone is very understanding. All the senior players in the team are great to have around. Their experience always helps in game situations,” he added.
Gaikwad also displayed a similar calmness and composure on the field that people have seen from MS Dhoni over the years. The CSK captain revealed that ‘neutrality’ is something he learned from Dhoni and now he neither gets too excited about wins nor thinks too low of losses.
“Being neutral is what I learned from Mahi bhai. Not getting too excited about anything or getting disappointed by anything is the right approach I have chosen,” Ruturaj said. “Whether I’m a captain or not, my approach is always the same while batting. It doesn’t change much. You can’t plan on being a leader, so being a good team player and putting the team first is always a good way to be a leader. “It’s an opportunity,” the CSK skipper explained.
