As the war enters its 934th day, the major events are as follows:
Here’s what it’ll look like on Monday, September 16, 2024:
go for it
- A Russian guided bomb has hit a multi-storey apartment building in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, causing a fire that killed at least one person and wounded 42. Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said three children were among the wounded.
- At least one person has been killed in Russian artillery fire on the eastern Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk, where Russian troops have been advancing for months. Russian air strikes over the past two weeks have left many residents of the strategically important city without water and electricity.
- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told CNN that Ukrainian forces had suffered heavy losses because Western weapons had arrived too slowly. Zelensky said the situation in the east was “very difficult,” and that half of the Ukrainian brigades fighting there were not fully armed.
- The Ukrainian Air Force said its air defense forces destroyed 10 of the 14 drones launched by Russia as of Sunday night. It also said Russia fired two Iskander-M ballistic missiles and one Kh-59 guided air missile targeting the southern part of Odessa. The guided air missile was destroyed, the air force said. It did not say what happened to the Iskander missile or whether it was damaged in the attack.
- President Zelensky said Russia used about 30 different types of missiles, more than 800 guided bombs and about 300 attack drones against Ukraine last week.
- The Russian Defense Ministry said its air defense forces destroyed 29 Ukrainian drones targeting seven Russian regions. Fifteen of the drones crashed over the Bryansk region, near the border with Ukraine.
Politics and Diplomacy
- U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said President Joe Biden would spend the remainder of his presidency “putting Ukraine in the best position” to stand up to Russia.

- After the Kharkiv attack, Zelensky again called on Ukraine’s Western allies to allow them to attack military targets deep inside Russia, especially air force bases. “Only a systemic solution can counter this terrorism, a long-term solution that destroys Russian military aircraft where they are,” Zelensky said in a speech late in the night.
- British Foreign Secretary David Lammy has slammed as “bluff” Russian President Vladimir Putin’s warning that NATO would be “at war” with Moscow if Ukraine were to be allowed to use long-range weapons to attack inside Russia.
- The head of Ukraine’s intelligence agency says increased production of Russian guided bombs and shipments of artillery ammunition from North Korea are causing problems for the Ukrainian military on the battlefield.
