The Russian cargo ship Ursa Major, believed to be evacuating soldiers and supplies from a Russian base in Syria, sank in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Spain on Monday night.
“The Russian dry cargo ship Ursa Major sank in the high seas of the Mediterranean due to an engine room explosion,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Telegram on Tuesday morning.
The Ministry of Defense added, “Of the 16 sailors (from the Russian Federation), 14 were rescued (and evacuated to the port of Murcia-Cartagena by a rescue team), and two were missing.”
