One person was killed in the Black Sea port city of Odessa and more than 30 injured across the country after Russia launched drones and missiles at Ukraine overnight, Ukrainian officials said.

According to Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne, a Russian drone attacked an apartment building in Odesa, causing a massive fire. Videos posted online showed cars and buildings burning and thick smoke billowing into the sky.
- Russian forces also attacked the northeastern city of Kharkiv with guided bombs, wounding at least 25 people, regional governor Ole Siniehubov said.

Russian air defense forces intercepted and destroyed 15 Ukrainian drones over the southern region of Bryansk, regional governor Alexander Bogomaz said, adding that there were no damage or injuries.
- Military bloggers reported that Russian troops entered the village of Sonchivka to capture the northwestern city of Kurahove on the Eastern Front during the war in Ukraine as part of a westward push to seize the entire Donbas region.
- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged in a nightly video address that fighting on the Eastern Front is heaviest around Kurakhove and Pokrovsk, key logistics hubs in the northwest.

- As Russia intensifies its attacks across the country, Prime Minister Zelenskiy renewed his appeal to Ukraine’s allies to help shore up air defenses and impose more sanctions on Moscow.
- Billionaire businessman and Trump supporter Elon Musk joined US President-elect Donald Trump in Zelenskyy’s 25-minute congratulatory call, according to US media. Musk said he would continue to supply Starlink satellites to Ukraine, according to news outlet Axios.
- U.S. President Joe Biden has allowed U.S. defense contractors to work in Ukraine and maintain and repair weapons provided by the Pentagon, U.S. officials said. This is a significant policy change to support Kiev’s war against Moscow.
- The 32-member NATO alliance said the “deepening military cooperation” between Russia and North Korea “impacts Euro-Atlantic security and also has implications for the Indo-Pacific.” Australia, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and Ukraine also supported the NATO statement. North Korea has sent thousands of soldiers to Russia.
- Russian and Ukrainian human rights officials exchanged prisoner-of-war lists at a rare meeting in Belarus. The two officials said they also facilitated the transfer of elderly women from Ukraine to Russia.
