Irish pair Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry made it through the playoffs to win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
Towards the end of the fourth round, Lowry sank a birdie putt to seal McIlroy’s outstanding chip shot onto the 18th green to extend the contest as he joined Martin Trainer and Chad Ramey at 25 under par at TPC Louisiana.
The American pair were among the early starters and shot 63, including seven birdies, on the back nine to sit 26th on the leaderboard. The playoffs look rusty.
And after Ramey pulled his second shot left and into the road, Trainer fell short in his effort to reach the green.
This gave Ryder Cup teammates McIlroy and Lowry an advantage despite finding sand on their second shots, but after Lowry missed his birdie putt, Trainer had to narrowly miss his own par putt to confirm his victory. It’s McIlroy’s 25th career tally. PGA Tour win.
Both McIlroy and Lowry have said they will return next year to defend their titles.
“It’s amazing,” McIlroy said. CBS Sports. “We had a great week here in New Orleans. The crowd was amazing and the support we got there. We had a lot of fun doing it and winning the competition was just a bonus. The end.
“It couldn’t be better than having this man by my side.”
America’s Martin Traynor pushed his putting to lead Lowry and McIlroy to victory in the playoffs.
Lowry added: “It’s great, we felt it was much needed. This week we felt we could take a big leap forward for the FedEx Cup and get each of us to 400 points and that’s what we did.
“It would be a shame to take it since Rory took it for me, but I will take it.”
