India captain Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from T20 international cricket after winning the World Cup in the final on Saturday.
Rohit said he will continue to represent India in Test and ODI formats, but will step away from the shortest format.
Rohit’s retirement announcement comes shortly after teammate Virat Kohli also announced his retirement from T20 internationals.
“For me, this was also my last game. There’s no better time to say goodbye. I really wanted this (trophy). “It’s very difficult to put into words.” Rohit said this at the post-match press conference.
“This is what I wanted and it happened. I desperately needed this in my life. I’m glad I crossed the line this time,” he added.
He has scored 4231 runs in 159 T20Is at a strike rate of 140.89 and an average of 32.05.
As captain, Rohit played 62 matches and scored 1905 runs at a strike rate of 149.76 and an average of 34.01. Out of the 62 matches, he won 49 of them as captain.
