India may miss the services of skipper Rohit Sharma for one of the first two Test matches in Australia due to personal reasons conveyed to the BCCI. Team India is set to embark on a tough five-Test series in Australia, starting from Perth on November 22, with Rohit likely to miss the first or second match in Adelaide (December 6-10). “There is not complete clarity on the situation. Rohit is understood to have hinted to the BCCI that he is likely to have to skip one of the two Tests at the start of the series due to urgent personal issues,” a BCCI source told PTI on condition of anonymity. said to
“I may play all five Tests if my personal issues are resolved before the series starts. We will know more in the coming days,” he said.
Rohit, 37, featured in both home Tests against Bangladesh. India will play the third Test rubber against New Zealand from October 16.
In case Rohit misses the Test match in Australia, the well-informed Abhimanyu Easwaran is likely to be his cover, although Shubman Gill and KL Rahul are also experienced players in the opening slot.
Easwaran will also be in Australia with the India A team, which he is scheduled to lead.
However, it is not known who will be the vice-captain of the Test team as there was no official vice-captain for Rohit in the recent home match against Bangladesh.
“I think we need to understand that this team has a lot of IPL captains, we have players like Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant and hopefully Yashasvi (Jaiswal) in the future.
“There are a lot of players who have led the franchise,” Abhishek Nayar told the media on the eve of the second Test against Bangladesh in Kanpur.
There are three candidates for this role – Rohit’s white-ball shoo-in Gill, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who led India in the England Test, and goalkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant.
“I wouldn’t look at them as young players anymore. Yes, they are young players in terms of age and the number of cricket games they have played, but overall, I think in their development mentally and as cricketers, they have the ability to: There is no need to have a vice-captain to appoint the necessary leadership qualities,” Nayar said about the red-ball vice-captain.
“I think overall the mindset of these youngsters is the same as that of a senior player. It’s the mindset of someone who has played a lot of cricket.”
