In some cases, you may want to allow other people in your home to access your Mac, but not your personal accounts. We’ll show you how to set up and manage temporary guest users.
If you regularly share your Mac with others, it’s best to set up a second administrator or set up a standard user account for that user. For visitors, for example, you can create a guest user account for short-term access.
Doing so will give you limited use of your computer or access to other accounts without a password. It is important to note that once the guest logs out, nothing is retained in the guest user account.
Create a guest user account
You must have an administrator account to create a guest user account. Typically, if you use your Mac exclusively, that account is already an administrator account.
Go to your account. apple menuselect Preferencesand then select Users and Groups option. You’ll see all existing accounts on your Mac, with your account listed as an administrator.
The Guest User option is usually marked “Off”. You can view the options available for your guest user account by clicking the “Info” button to the right of your guest user account.
Here you can rename the guest user account if you wish. to the next Allow guests to log in to this computer switch.
You can also choose to turn on the following options: Restrictions on adult websites, you will need an administrator password to make changes. When activated, access to known adult sites will be blocked.
You can also choose: Allow guest users to connect to shared folders By activating the switch provided.
Even after you log out of your account, you may still see a login page that contains only your account. When this happens, click on your account icon and your other accounts will appear as well.
Guest user restrictions
Guest users cannot install software, make changes to the system, or remotely log in to their account from other devices. All files created under the guest user account are stored in a temporary folder and deleted when the guest logs out.
If a guest user creates something on your Mac that you want to save, you have a few options. You can save it to your own cloud storage solution, copy it to a portable storage device, or email it to your home or another email address. But you have to do it this way. before They log out.
You can also save files to a shared folder on another computer on the network if you allow that option. The Find My service can also help guest users find lost devices if they have that option turned on for their devices.
It’s important to note that if FileVault is turned on on your computer, guest users will only have access to Safari. You won’t be able to create any files on your computer, and you won’t be able to access anything on the drive.
Guest user account management
Guest user accounts are intended for short-term, temporary access to very limited parts of your Mac. If you need a guest user account, you can disable it.
To do so, use your administrator account and return to: PreferencesThen Users and Groupsand turn off the switch that allows guests to log in to the computer.
If someone needs to access your Mac frequently, the guest user options may be too limited for your needs. You can also set up a standard account, which has some limitations but is not as restrictive as a guest user account.
Standard user account options
Standard users can install applications and change their own settings. You cannot add or delete other accounts or change other users’ settings.
If you have family or other people who will use your Mac regularly, consider giving them a standard account. Only the Mac owner should have an administrator account and, for security reasons, a unique and strong password that non-administrators cannot access.
Create additional users at: Users and Groups System Settings section. click Add user Start the process and add your username, account name, password for that account, and password hint.
Then please click blue Create user Click the button and your account will be created.
If you have more than one account on your Mac, you can choose which account to log in to from the Start screen. If you only see one user on the Start screen, clicking the icon will display other accounts.
To change accounts, click the “People” icon on the right side of the menu bar, usually between the Wi-Fi indicator and the Spotlight search icon.
