What does that have to do with Resident Evil?
I’ll get bitten though. TLOU2 garnered 4 million units at launch, but despite huge momentum at the start, it suddenly took two years to reach 10 million units. Additionally, unlike other games released around the same time, such as Doom Eternal, FFVII Remake, and Ghost of Tsushima, it was discounted much earlier and more heavily discounted in comparison. I remember seeing it online at GAME for £19.99 since December, and on PSN it was discounted more than others.
God of War 2018 sold 3.1 million copies at launch (lower than TLOU2 at launch), but was revealed to have sold 10 million copies in just one year.
Ghost of Tsushima, a new IP, has sold 9.73 million units two years after its release, one month after TLOU2. That’s very close to 10 million, and since the game is new, it didn’t already have a fan base to support it in terms of hype and expectations.
Yes, 10 million is a big number, but let’s not kid ourselves. With all the hype and love for that franchise, I’m betting Sony was expecting it to do a much bigger job given how much it did. It wasn’t a failure in the traditional sense, but Sony was clearly expecting much higher sales within that period.
