The Milwaukee Brewers took a 3-0 lead against the Boston Red Sox last Friday night on William Contreras’ 111.8 mph two-run home run in the top of the third inning. Not only did the scream land on the Green Monster seats at Fenway Park, it also destroyed a fan’s in-game snack.
As two Red Sox fans dodged an attempt to hit him in the face, the ball bounced behind them and landed in a popcorn bucket, sending the kernel flying.
Fans weren’t disappointed for long. Brewers analyst Tim Dillard delivered them some fresh popcorn late in the game.
But their night wasn’t over.
While AppleTV+’s Tricia Whitaker interviewed Contreras after the game, she had him autograph a bucket of popcorn he hit and the Red Sox couple got to meet the Brewers’ catcher.
“It was a beautiful moment,” Contreras told Whittaker after the game. “It was a beautiful moment for me, a beautiful moment for them that they will never forget. It was a great moment for us to experience together.”
Contreras, who ranks fifth in MLB with 42 RBIs and leads all catchers with a batting average of .337, finished the game with 2 hits in 4 at bats in the 7-2 Brewers’ win. Now he can include one destroyed bucket in his stat line for the season.
“If they asked me to pay for the popcorn, I said I would pay with a few tickets,” Contreras said.
