Rebel Wilson first came out as gay in 2022 and later became engaged to her partner Ramona Agruma, a jewelry designer and founder of Lemon Ve Limon. While recently discussing diversity in film and TV casting with Deadline, Wilson said, “I think you should be able to play any role you want. But I always think your job in comedy is to always play around with acceptable lines. Sometimes you go beyond that, but at the end of the day, you’re trying to please people.”
Rebel Wilson admits that it can be a bit tricky for a straight actor to play a gay character, but her experience comes primarily from the world of comedy, where laughs are important. Still, she acknowledges that more dramatic or demanding roles can make it difficult for straight actors to truly tap into their gay roots. In this regard, Wilson says the performance would be like having a skinny person make fun of an overweight person without walking a mile, she jokes.
