Ravi Shastri’s thoughts on ‘luxury’ tennis at Wimbledon
Sharing his experience of watching high-quality tennis up close, Shastri said Wimbledon exudes a unique class. He said the crowd at Wimbledon is quite different from that of football or cricket matches.
“It’s fantastic. It’s just class. I’ve been coming here regularly every summer when I’m in England for over 30 years. It’s just fantastic. There’s something about it that feels traditional and historic, and it’s classy. Like I said, it’s the quality, the atmosphere, the crowds are different. It’s a lot softer than a football or cricket crowd, but the quality is great,” he told Star Sports.
Shastri also spoke about the Indian players who participated in Wimbledon and shared an anecdote from when he first attended Wimbledon in 1982.
“Leander Pais and Mahesh Bhupathi did it for years, Vijay Amritraj did it before that and actually the first time I came to Wimbledon was in 1982 when Connors won and Vijay came in with us and took us into the changing room. He took Sunny and me into the locker room, which wasn’t the changing room as they say, and that’s when I met Jimmy Connors and we’ve been coming ever since,” he added.
