Liverpool have had many great players over the years and it is always a sad day when a former fan favorite says farewell to the game.
Ragnar Klavan wrote on his Instagram account: ‘Today I am saying goodbye to my ‘first love’ as I close 24 amazing years as a professional footballer.
‘There are so many people to be thankful for – family, friends, teammates, coaches.
‘My next big dream is for Estonian football. ‘I am delighted to announce my candidacy for the position of President of the Estonian Football Association in 2025.’
It’s a lovely message from the former defender, who certainly won many over with his redshirt performances.
Ragnar Klavan will be remembered for his Burnley goal
Over the course of two seasons, the centre-back made 53 appearances and scored two goals, but his most memorable performance was against Burnley on New Year’s Day.
His last appearance came off the bench in the 2018 Champions League semi-final, which shows the trust Jurgen Klopp had in the player.
James Milner joked that all the old man’s jokes would be on him when our former No.17’s move to Cagliari was confirmed six years ago. This is a perfect example of how he was utilized as an experienced head man in a young group. .
The arrival of Virgil van Dijk ushered in a new era in our defense and United went from strength to strength.
The Estonian’s last involvement in the city was when he was tasked with reading his country’s Eurovision scores when we hosted the 2023 competition.
But this update shows the 39-year-old is continuing to play, having announced his candidacy for the Estonian Football Association presidency.
Let’s look forward to a bright and prosperous future for the player who had a short but memorable spell on Merseyside.
Confirmation of Klavan’s retirement can be found through his Instagram account.
