Angel City FC News Release
LOS ANGELES – Angel City Football Club (ACFC) is gearing up this week to face the Washington Spirit at BMO Stadium on Friday, September 27th for the club’s Celebración de Culturas. The game is scheduled to kick off at 7pm PT/10pm ET and will be streamed live on Prime Video.
Below, check out comments from the club’s head coach Becky Tweed and defender Madison Curry.
ACFC defender Madison Curry
On her growth this season:
“It’s been nice to embrace my role this year and not have to have a lot of expectations. The team here has helped me a lot. Now that I’m here, my mindset is how can I best help the team? I’m going to focus on winning and doing whatever it takes to get to that point on and off the field.”
On playing as a substitute when defender MA Vignola was injured:
“It was a huge deal, but she was my biggest supporter through it all. Now it’s turned into us both motivating each other and going out on the field together. It’s been exciting to have that shared respect for each other and wanting to be on the field at the same time.”
On being handed a centre-back role for the first time in her professional career after Sarah Gordon’s injury:
“I can’t fill Sarah’s shoes, but I used the support system that surrounded me in that game and the ones after that. I didn’t learn enough about the position to be completely comfortable there, but versatility is a gift, and the ability to try and learn was special. I’m grateful that the team trusted me to do that.”
Regarding the club’s upcoming match against the Washington Spirit:
“We are going for three points and there is no better way to do it than at BMO Stadium. Losing to them last time has added more fuel to our fire to bounce back against them. With them above us in the table, it is an opportunity to assert our will and show what we can do when we are at the top of the game.”
ACFC Head Coach Becky Tweed
On the important preparations for the game against the Washington Spirit:
“Rest, recovery and freshness will be the most important things on Friday. We’re trying to come in and reflect on the game and move forward, but the priority is definitely rest and recovery.”
Improvements needed for Friday’s game:
“Structure-wise we have to be a lot better. The determination and desire we showed in the last 20 minutes on Monday was incredible. We will never give up and we will always be a team that keeps ourselves in it.”
“I was very proud of the team’s reaction after we lost and our ability to score a second goal and keep knocking on the door for a third. We weren’t satisfied with a draw and I think that speaks volumes about the character of this team.”
“We have to be accountable and responsible for our own role. We have to show up every day as the best version of ourselves and give everything we have on game day, knowing that we did everything we could control the week before the game.”
“The grit and determination we showed last year is still there. We have to bring it every day and bring it to the game.”
Thoughts on Friday’s game against the Washington Spirit:
“They are a quality team and have already qualified for the playoffs. They have great individual players and are really coming together as a team. What they have put together in the roster is great and I am happy to see Jonatan (Giráldez) join the league after his career at Barcelona.”
“As we continue to grow and challenge this league, we need to play every team like it’s a cup final. Having the quality that the Washington Spirit brings to this league, both in terms of coaching staff and players, is always a huge positive for the NWSL. We want to compete against those types of clubs every week.”
