Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his respect for Bollywood, saying Indian films enjoy enormous popularity in Russia compared to films from other BRICS countries. In a press briefing on October 18, 2024, ahead of the upcoming BRICS summit, Putin highlighted the cultural ties between India and Russia, pointing out that Russia has a dedicated TV channel that broadcasts Bollywood movies round the clock.
“We are very interested in Indian cinema,” he said, highlighting the potential for cooperation in promoting Indian cinema in Russia and expressing optimism about finding common ground to foster such cooperation.
Putin said he plans to discuss these opportunities with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the BRICS summit in Kazan on October 22-23. He noted that the Moscow International Film Festival will showcase films from BRICS countries and further strengthen cultural exchanges.
The Russian president also pointed out that films are an essential part of the economy and suggested that discussions could be expanded to other sectors such as pharmaceuticals and the automotive industry.
In response to President Putin’s remarks, Indian public relations expert Dale Bhagwagar, called the ‘father of Bollywood PR’, emphasized the importance of international cooperation for the Indian film industry.
“The beauty of film lies in its ability to transcend borders and unite cultures. Collaborating with global partners not only enriches our storytelling, but also opens new avenues for creativity and innovation. Together with other film industries around the world, we can create cinematic experiences that resonate with audiences across the globe,” said a Bollywood public relations expert.
Records show that historical assessments of Russian Bollywood go back decades. Films like Awaara and Disco Dancer have become iconic among Russian audiences.
Putin’s comments reflect a broader strategy to strengthen relations between India and Russia through cultural diplomacy, positioning Bollywood as an important medium for promoting mutual understanding and economic cooperation.
As the two countries prepare for the BRICS summit, they are expected to discuss not only film cooperation but also broader economic partnerships, strengthening their commitment to multilateralism in a changing global scenario.
