Pope Francis was welcomed in Vanimo, off the coast of Papua New Guinea, where he wore a traditional bird-of-paradise feather headdress.
He came to Vanimo at the invitation of local missionaries from the Catholic Institute of the Incarnate Word, who, like Pope Francis, are Argentines.
He previously celebrated Mass in the capital Port Moresby, which was attended by at least 35,000 people.
Pope Francis is scheduled to visit Papua New Guinea until Monday, with Indonesia as part of his trip. He will then travel to East Timor and Singapore before returning to Rome.
