The official statement does not elaborate on the reason for the dismissal, but local media linked it to the disappearance of an anti-tank mine in June 2024, which Koepcinski allegedly concealed from his superiors.
According to reports, soldiers failed to unload some of the trains carrying over 1,000 tons of explosives, and anti-tank mines went missing while traveling across the country. Media reported that false information about the number of landmines was provided on paper.
Officials appear to have become aware of the problem when weapons were discovered in an IKEA warehouse. At that point, someone called the military and asked, “When are you going to clear the mines?”
Prosecutors said Friday that an investigation into the matter began last year and is currently ongoing.
Kępczynski did not immediately respond to POLITICO’s request for comment.
