PlayStation co-CEO Hermen Hulst said Sony is ready to revive its back catalog of classic gaming franchises.
In an interview with Famitsu, the executive said that going forward, the platform holder plans to offer a wide range of experiences through collaborations with its own studios and external developers.
“The diverse IP we own is an important asset to PlayStation, and as part of our efforts to strengthen our portfolio, we continually look for opportunities to leverage past IP and develop new franchises,” he said.
“Our goal is to publish games from the world’s best creators, both inside and outside of PlayStation, and we’ve had a lot of success to date by working closely with external development studios.”
Hulst also praised the performance of Team Asobi’s Astro Bot, which won Game of the Year at The Game Awards this month.
According to the co-CEOs, Astro Bot sold 1.5 million copies in its first nine weeks, with nearly 40% of those coming from players purchasing a PlayStation game for the first time or for the first time in two years.
“We’re thrilled to see the positive response from the gaming community, with a 94 Metacritic score and a wide range of players who are truly enjoying the game,” said Hulst.
“We also had a higher percentage of younger players and families purchasing the game compared to other titles, which contributed significantly to the expansion of our community.”
