The 2024 NFL season begins on Thursday, September 5, when the Ravens face the Chiefs in Kansas City. This weekend is the NFL’s last preseason game before roster cuts begin. Thirty of the league’s 32 teams have already named their 2024 starters.
Only the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots have yet to name a starting QB. For the Steelers, Russell Wilson and Justin Fields are competing for the starting job. For New England, Jacoby Brissett and rookie Drake May are competing for QB1. In both situations, will the veteran QB take the starting job? Are young QBs the new wave in the NFL?
The Steelers and Patriots still have to pick their starting QBs for 2024.
What Jarrod Mayo said about Drake May (8/16): “… I think he needs to get those guys to the huddle quicker, get them out of the huddle quicker and get them to the line… That’s definitely something he needs to work on.”

In the offseason, the Steelers decided to change up their QB room after two seasons with Kenny Pickett. Pittsburgh signed Russell Wilson to a veteran’s minimum contract after he was waived by the Broncos. Along with Wilson, the Steelers traded with the Bears for former first-round pick QB Justin Fields. Wilson was the starter for Pittsburgh throughout training camp and the preseason, but coach Mike Tomlin did not name Wilson the starter for Week 1. The Steelers play their final preseason game this weekend against the Lions. It could be Justin Fields’ last chance to win over the coaching staff and earn the starting job.
English: The Patriots are competing for the starting job with Jacoby Brissett and rookie Drake Maye. Brissett will be entering his eighth pro season as a QB. It will be his second season with the Patriots and his first since his rookie season in 2016. He was with the Commanders in 2023 and started three games. The 31-year-old has started 48 games in his career. Competing with Brissett for QB1 this offseason is rookie Drake Maye. The Patriots drafted him third overall in the 2024 draft out of North Carolina. The Patriots have a rookie head coach in Jerod Mayo, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see Maye start the season as the backup. Both New England and Pittsburgh will name their starting QBs sooner rather than later as the 2024 regular season approaches.
