ARLINGTON, Texas — Philadelphia Phillies left-hander Christopher Sanchez will make his first All-Star appearance, replacing Atlanta left-hander Chris Sale, who is scheduled to start for the Braves on Sunday and will not pitch in the Midsummer Classic.
With Sanchez’s addition on Saturday, the Phillies now have eight All-Stars, the most in MLB, a franchise record.
The game will be played Tuesday night at home to the Texas Rangers. Philadelphia enters the offseason as the only team in the majors with at least 60 wins.
Sanchez is the third member of the Philadelphia rotation to be named an All-Star, but he’s the only one who has a chance of making it.
Right-handed pitcher Zack Wheeler is already sidelined with back spasms, and left-handed pitcher Ranger Suarez was replaced Saturday by Atlanta’s right-handed pitcher Max Fried, who is making his second All-Star appearance.
Sanchez is the 38th first-time All-Star, while Fried is the 10th alternate, the sixth in the National League. Their additions bring the total number of All-Stars to 74.
Sanchez, 27, went 7-4 with a 2.96 ERA. He allowed two runs in six innings in a 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in his last start before the break on Wednesday.
The Phillies have three starting pitchers in first baseman Bryce Harper, shortstop Trea Turner and third baseman Alec Bohm. Relievers Jeff Hoffman and Matt Strahm round out Philadelphia’s rotation.
Sale earned his MLB-leading 12th win with a 6-2 win over Arizona on Tuesday, the 35-year-old’s eighth All-Star selection.
Seattle’s Logan Gilbert was replaced by teammate reliever Andres Munoz, who is also slated to start for the Mariners on Sunday.
Minnesota infielder/outfielder Willie Castro, Baltimore outfielder Anthony Santander and Orioles infielder Jordan Westberg were added early to the AL roster in place of Houston shortstop Jose Altuve (sore left hand), Boston third baseman Rafael Devers (sore left shoulder) and Houston outfielder Kyle Tucker (bruised right shin).
Pittsburgh right-hander Paul Skenes, Cincinnati shortstop Eli De La Cruz, right-hander Hunter Greene and San Francisco outfielder Heliot Ramos were among the National Leaguers to replace Wheeler, Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts (broken left hand), right-hander Tyler Glasnow (lower back strain) and San Diego outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. (right thigh).
Texas’ Marcus Semien replaced Altuve in the AL starting lineup.
Skines is slated to start in the National League after making just 11 starts in the majors.
