Pep Guardiola says Kevin De Bruyne’s age will affect whether he renews Manchester City’s contract and the club must “think” about whether it is the right thing to do.
Belgian midfielder De Bruyne has been one of City’s star players since joining the club in 2015, but he turns 34 in June, just days before his contract with the Premier League champions expires.
De Bruyne has also struggled with injuries over the past two seasons and has started just eight games this season, with neither club nor player in top form.
He admitted talks over a new deal have not yet begun and when asked about the possibility of a deal being struck, Guardiola said on Friday the club would consider all aspects.
“He’s had problems over the last year and a half, like a lot of players this year.” The City manager said: “Of course, if he is consistent, healthy and can play regularly, I have said many times that he is a really important player and a decisive player for us.
“What happens, how he performs until the end of the season, his age and many other things, I think the club has to think about that.”
De Bruyne has been linked with a move to San Diego FC in the Saudi Pro League and MLS, and has been allowed to negotiate a free transfer with a club outside the UK.
Meanwhile, Guardiola said he did not know whether City would be able to strengthen their squad in January.
The Spanish manager has previously said he intends to use the winter market to look for reinforcements, but insisted ahead of Saturday’s clash with West Ham United: “I don’t know now — it’s not easy. It’s not going to be easy.” .
“Maybe we can sign, maybe we won’t sign anyone. The club has to be smart, don’t bring in players just to do that. I don’t know if that’s possible.”
In more positive City news, Guardiola said he hopes Ballon d’Or-winning midfielder Rodri can return before the end of the season.
City are sixth in the table and looking for a second successive league win against West Ham at the Etihad Stadium.
