The Palestinian president reiterated his call for an “immediate ceasefire and complete Israeli withdrawal” from the besieged territory.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said in his first statement since the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas was announced that the Palestinian Authority (PA) is ready to take “full responsibility” for the post-war Gaza Strip.
The Palestinian Authority has completed all preparations to assume full responsibility in the Gaza Strip in accordance with President Abbas’ instructions, a statement from the president’s office said Friday.
This includes returning displaced people, providing basic services, managing crossings and rebuilding war-torn areas.
The statement released by the Palestinian Wafa news agency also reiterated Abbas’s government’s call for “an immediate ceasefire and complete Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip.”
Hamas has exercised complete control over the Gaza Strip since 2007, but the PA, dominated by the Fatah movement, runs the West Bank, which is occupied by Israeli forces.
Israel currently has no clear position on post-war governance other than rejecting the role of both Hamas and the PA.
Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have repeatedly opposed Hamas or the PA ruling the Palestinian territories, describing both scenarios as “payback” for the October 7, 2023, attack.
But outgoing US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said last week that the PA should run the coastal territory.
Palestinian leaders from various factions have long said that Gaza’s future should be decided by itself, rejecting outside interference.
Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa on Friday called on the European Union to redeploy its surveillance mission to the Rafah border crossing and facilitate entry into the Gaza Strip, saying government agencies were ready to strengthen operations and restore basic services in Gaza. . backup.
“Palestinian ministers have clear instructions on what to do from the moment the ceasefire begins. We have a 100-day plan for the next day.” Mustafa said this, according to Belga news agency, during a trip to Brussels.
