ATLANTA — Jurickson Profar agreed to a three-year, $42 million contract with the Atlanta Braves on Thursday. It’s been less than a year since the outfielder signed a $1 million contract from the San Diego Padres, with spring training already underway.
Profar revitalized his career last year with the Padres, hitting 24 home runs and hitting .280. Profar scored 94 points, scored 85 points and had 10 steals. He finalized his $1 million contract on February 24 and earned an additional $2.5 million from his plate appearances.
Atlanta doesn’t expect 2023 NL MVP Ronald Acuña Jr. to be ready to start the season. Acuña tore his left ACL on May 26 and underwent surgery on June 6.
The Braves also signed Bryan De La Cruz to a one-year deal on Dec. 16 to add outfield depth, but had a quiet offseason before adding Profar.
Profar joins Michael Harris, Jarred Kelenic and De La Cruz as Atlanta’s top outfielders. Acuña could be ready to join the team in May or June.
Profar enjoyed his long-awaited breakout at age 31 after signing a one-year deal with San Diego. He made his major league debut with Texas at the age of 19 and eventually earned his first All-Star selection during last season’s game in Texas.
Profar set career highs in batting, home runs, RBI, and hits with 158. He was the NL’s starting left fielder in the All-Star Game and earned his first Silver Slugger Award after the season.
Profar will earn $12 million in 2025 and $15 million each of the next two seasons. He plans to donate 1% of his salary to the Atlanta Braves Foundation.
Profar, a Curaçao native, has a career batting average of .245 with 111 home runs in 11 seasons. He has played every position except pitcher and catcher, but primarily played left field last season.
Infielder Connor Gillespie was designated to open a roster spot.
