Forensic investigators said the back of the futuristic pickup truck was filled with firework mortars and camp fuel cans.
Authorities said they used the Turo app in Colorado to identify the person who rented the truck, but will not release the name until investigators confirm it is the same person who died.
Authorities are also investigating potential terrorism links.
Video captured at a Tesla charging station provided by Tesla CEO Elon Musk helped authorities track the vehicle’s path of travel. The vehicle arrived in Las Vegas around 7:30 a.m. local time (4:30 p.m. CT) and drove into the valet area of the Trump International Hotel about an hour later, where it exploded for 15 to 20 seconds before exploding. stayed.
“We can now confirm that the explosion was caused by an oversized firework and/or bomb carried in the bed of a rented Cybertruck and was not related to the vehicle itself,” Musk said on X Wednesday afternoon. “All vehicle telemetry was positive at the time of the explosion.”
Musk recently became part of the president-elect’s inner circle and attended a New Year’s Eve party at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
