Adelaide Strikers have secured the services of Bazball apprentice Ollie Pope ahead of the Big Bash League season, signing a replacement for England’s Test captain as a pre-draft addition for the 2024/25 season.
The 26-year-old, who is currently leading England in the series opener against Sri Lanka in the absence of Ben Stokes, is expected to join the Strikers camp after England’s Test tour of New Zealand, which concludes on December 18. He will therefore miss the club’s opening game against Sydney Thunder at Manuka Oval in Canberra on December 17.
“Signing with the Adelaide Strikers is a tremendous opportunity for me,” Pope said in a statement.
“I’ve been watching the Big Bash since I was a kid and it’s always been a competition I’ve always wanted to be a part of. Adelaide is a fantastic city with a vibrant cricket culture and Adelaide Oval is one of the most iconic stadiums in the world.
“I’m really looking forward to playing in front of the passionate Strikers fans and being part of a team with such a strong reputation. The opportunity to rub shoulders with such amazing players and contribute to the team’s success is something I’m really looking forward to.
“I can’t wait to get started.”

A part-time wicketkeeper, Pope has scored 1295 runs in 60 T20 matches at an average of 28.77 and a strike rate of 132.82.
“Ollie Pope is an exceptionally talented player with a proven track record at the highest level,” Strikers coach Tim Paine said in a statement.
“His dynamic batting style and wicket-keeping ability are a fantastic addition to our squad.
“We are delighted to have him on board and believe he will be a key player for us this season. His experience and leadership will undoubtedly elevate our team.”
The Strikers are expected to retain fellow England player Jamie Overton in next weekend’s draft, while Afghanistan superstar Rashid Khan has decided not to nominate for this summer’s tournament.
Earlier this week, Australian Test wicketkeeper Alex Carey signed a four-year contract with the Strikers, while international teammate Travis Head also penned a new deal with the Adelaide club.
The 14th edition of the BBL begins in December.
