At this point, the existence of an Elder Scrolls: Oblivion remake seems all but confirmed. In 2022, FTC court documents mentioned an Oblivion remaster. We’ve seen a leaked 2023 Bethesda release schedule mention it, and several insiders have also mentioned its existence, including Nate the Hate, who recently revealed that it’s scheduled for a June release.
Xbox has a Developer Direct scheduled for this month and will include unreleased projects, but current rumors suggest the remaster won’t appear there.
Now, a new report from MP1ST suggests that the remake will not only include a graphical overhaul but also gameplay improvements.
According to MP1ST, the information comes from the website of a former Virtous employee (a company believed to have worked on the project). The content has since been deleted, so only the words MP1ST remain. There are no screenshots of the information, and MP1ST noted that it did not want to release the employee’s name for privacy reasons.
First, the game is being “completely remade” in Unreal Engine 5, so that alone means it’s in need of a major visual overhaul. Additionally, Stamina, Sneak, Blocking, Archery, Hit Reaction, and HUD are all adjusted at once. other.
- The original system was too “boring” and “frustrating”, so they took ideas from games like Souls and “ACT” games (MP1ST believes these are titles like Assassin’s Creed) to improve the blocking functionality.
- The sneak icon is now highlighted and the damage model has been reworked.
- The stamina system has been redesigned to make it “less frustrating.” And less frequent knockdowns.
- The HUD has been updated to be easier to read and look better.
- Hit reactions make landing hits more satisfying.
- Archer has been revamped “to make it more playable and modern from both third-person and first-person perspectives.”
Full remakes are always tricky territory, as they can either help make an already great game even better, or risk stripping away what made the original special. These brief remarks imply that this is more than just a visual tweak, but it could be argued that Oblivion’s clunkiness is part of its charm. That said, Oblivion’s gameplay felt dated back in the day, so it’s outdated by 2025 standards.
What do you think? Oblivion was a huge moment in my gaming past, so I’m excited to have an excuse to play it again. However, I am worried that even if there are changes, we will not be able to survive in 2025.
