“It’s definitely an exciting time for Bevon and his family,” said NZC selector Sam Wells. “He is a promising player with a lot of talent and we are looking forward to giving him exposure to international cricket.
“He obviously has a lot of power with the bat, but he has also shown in the longer formats that he has decent technique and temperament.”
After narrowly missing another half-century in his second match, he hit 80 against his former side Canterbury.
Foulkes and Robinson debuted in T20Is against Pakistan in April, while Hay’s debut came in Sri Lanka in November. Hay is expected to keep wicket in the T20Is and will then be a cover for Tom Latham in the ODIs.
Jacobs, Foulkes and Robinson have only been called up for T20Is, but Latham, Will Young and Will O’Rourke will feature in the one-day squad. O’Rourke was rested for the T20Is after a heavy Test workload, taking part in all eight Tests against Sri Lanka, India and England.
Ben Sears and Kyle Jamieson are unavailable for the game as they are still recovering from knee and back injuries respectively.
The team will be coached by Luke Ronchi, while regular head coach Gary Stead will take a break. Ronchi will assist Jacob Oram as bowling coach, while Craig McMillan will take charge of batting and fielding.
New Zealand will also play a tri-series in Pakistan, including against South Africa, before the start of the Champions Trophy.
“Like the squad that recently toured Sri Lanka, we want to continue exposing new talent to the big stage and it’s good to have a core of experienced players around,” Wells said. “Like all ICC premier events, the Champions Trophy is a solid incentive for players and we know many will be eager to put their best foot forward in the ODI series and be in the frame of selection.”
T20Is will be held on December 28, 30 and January 2 while ODIs will be held on January 5, 8 and 11.
