Waratahs coach Darren Coleman has been credited with “three challenging seasons” but will not get a fourth after the Super Rugby side confirmed they would not be offering him a new contract.
Before leaving, Coleman will watch the final two games of the 2024 season against Moana Pacifica and the Queensland Reds at Allianz Stadium.
The Waratahs have lost 10 of their 12 games this season and sit last in the Super Rugby Pacific table. The gruesome injury forced the player to be loaned out from the Melbourne Rebels and scour the local rugby ranks to find a replacement.

Coleman guided the Waratahs to finals in both the 2022 and 2023 seasons, but this season’s setbacks proved too much for him to retain his position.
Last weekend the Waratahs were beaten 27-7 by the Western Force, who have won just four games.
“During his tenure, Darren has developed deep links with rugby in NSW, particularly the Shute Shield, his passion for the game and his commitment to the team.”
Waratahs chief executive Paul Doorn said once the decision was confirmed:
“His leadership of the program has always been very assured and he has built genuine relationships with staff, players and Waratah fans.
“Under Darren’s leadership, the NSW Waratahs have navigated three challenging seasons with resilience and determination, key aspects of his coaching.
“The infusion of ‘Tah Tough’ into the team’s on-field performances is commendable and has fostered a culture of teamwork and hard work.
“The decision not to extend Darren’s contract was made after careful consideration and evaluation of our high-performance capabilities, the performance of our team and the future goals of our organization.
“The NSW Waratahs would like to thank Darren for his hard work and dedication during his time with our club and wish Darren all the best in his future endeavours.”
The Waratahs, who now operate after Rugby Australia took over, have already begun the process of identifying and appointing a new coach, with former mentor Michael Cheika rumored to be a target.
