Mammoth’s upset is forever remembered in fan lore. The Northern Illinois Huskies’ then-No. 5 But the Notre Dame Fighting Irish got a more tangible memento: the bourbon line.
On Monday, Northern Illinois announced the release of “Boneyard Blend” bourbon in partnership with local distillery Whiskey Acres. This blend serves as a celebration of Husky athletics’ 125th anniversary and landmark victories.
Like all major victories, the Huskies’ victory was against a larger, better-resourced program and was first celebrated at Northern Illinois’ “Boneyard” in DeKalb. Since 1983, the Huskies have recorded a total of 19 “boneyard wins,” including wins over teams such as Notre Dame, Alabama Crimson Tide and Iowa Hawkeyes.
But the Fighting Irish’s 16-14 comeback victory in South Bend, Northern Illinois’ first win over a top-five opponent in program history, was deemed worth more than just a bone.
